Three Players Withdraw from Canada Squad for Argentina Friendlies

Canada’s women’s national team will be without Olivia Smith, Evelyne Viens, and Clarissa Larisey for their upcoming friendlies against Argentina. The three attackers were part of Casey Stoney’s 23-player squad but have withdrawn due to injuries.

Their absences raise questions about whether Stoney is taking extra precautions after recent controversy surrounding Alphonso Davies. Davies’ agent, Nedal Huoseh, criticized Canada Soccer for playing him in the Concacaf Nations League third-place match against the U.S., despite an injury sustained in the semifinal against Mexico. There are even rumors that Bayern Munich is considering action against Canada Soccer. However, Canada Soccer defended its decision, stating that its medical and technical staff followed professional protocols and deemed Davies fit to play.

For the CanWNT, the injured players will now remain with their clubs instead of traveling to British Columbia. In their place, Canada Soccer has called up two NCAA standouts and a player from the new Northern Super League.

Kayla Briggs (Michigan State University) and Holly Ward (Vancouver Rise FC) have received their first senior national team call-ups. Ella Ottey (University of Wisconsin-Madison) will also join as a training player.

The squad will now prepare for the matches with these new additions. The game is scheduled for April 4 at BC Place. Tickets available
